Washington drops 35, Knights win in OT

By Bryan Williams

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Jaylen Washington scored seven of his game-high 35 points in the second quarter helping Kenwood hold off Rossview 64-60 in overtime during a District 10-AAA game Friday.

The win moved Kenwood to 9-2 in District 10-AAA and 12-9 overall. Rossview is 3-10 and 4-17 overall.

Playing without one of its key starters, Scooter Williams, Kenwood needed someone to pick up the offensive slack and Washington answered.

Washington hit a deep 3-pointer as the first quarter ended to give the Knights a 17-12 lead.

But Rossview had its own answer in Spencer Mimms, who scored five of his 24 points in the second quarter to keep the Hawks within 28-23 at halftime.

The game remained tight heading into the fourth quarter with Washington hitting a late free throw to give the Knights a 40-37 lead late in the three quarter.

With the quarter winding down, Julian Hatfield would get a huge block, leading to a Mimms’ basket that cut the Kenwood margin down to two.

The Hawks would take the lead with 1:54 remaining in regulation on Mimm’s basket, but Washington hit a 3-pointer tying the score with 38 seconds remaining.

In the closing seconds of overtime, Kenwood hit two free throws and the Knights would seal the game with a steal off an inbounds pass.
