Smith opens with 80 at Augusta National

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Mariah Smith shot an opening round 8-over 80 in the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur at Champions Retreat Wednesday.

Smith had eight bogeys, a double bogey and one birdie in her round. She is tied for 66th overall.

Jennifer Kupcho and Zoe Campos share the lead after the first 18 holes with identical 4-under-72s. A total of 14 golfers shot under par, while six shot par.

Smith, a 20-year-old sophomore at Tennessee, finished tied for third at the Bobby Nichols Invitational and tied for fourth at the Starmount Forest Fall Classic. She is the defending Tennessee Women’s Amateur Championship.

The second round will get underway early Thursday, with the field cut after 36 holes.
