CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay couldn’t survive a cold shooting first quarter and lost to Eastern Illinois 67-57 in an OVC Tournament game at the Dunn Center Saturday.

Austin Peay was held to eight first-quarter points and trailed by 12 points at halftime. The Govs shot 37 percent in the game, including 18 percent from the 3-point line.

“Our effort in the second half was better. We scored 41 points in that half, despite not play particularly well,” Govs coach David Midlick said. “We had a little more energy, more ball movement that wasn’t there in the first half.”

Gabby Gregory paced the Govs with 11 points while Arielle Gonzalez-Varner and Keisha Gregory had 10 points apiece. Gonzelez-Varner had eight rebounds and three steals and Gregory had six assists.

Eastern Illinois’ Grace McRae scored 16 points and had eight rebounds. Jalisha Smith had 13 points.

The Govs dropped to 11-12 and 6-6 in the OVC, while the Lady Panthers moved to 10-13 and 4-8.

Eastern Illinois held a 14-8 lead after the first quarter, but quickly stretched their lead to 28-16 at the half.

Austin Peay found its offensive rhythm in the second half, putting up 17 points in the third quarter and 24 points in the fourth quarter.

The Govs trailed by 17 points in the second half, eventually cutting the deficit to five, but the Panthers held on for a 10-point win.
