Clarksville, Tenn. – Winning state golf titles has become habit forming for two Clarksville area teams.

Clarksville High added to its golf legacy when it shot a second round 144 to win the Class AAA girls’ state golf title by seven strokes at WillowBrook Golf Club in Manchester Wednesday.

The Lady Wildcats shot a 151-144 – 295, beating Coffee County, which finished with a 304.

To go along with their third state team championship, Clarksville High picked up its second individual title when Mariah Smith blistered the course with a 4-under 68 in the second round. Smith shot a 71-68 – 139, edging out Brighton’s Aubree Jones by a stroke.

Jones won the individual title in 2013 and ’14 and was state runner-up last season to Houston’s Jayna Choi, who tied a one-round tournament record shooting a 64.

Smith joined former Clarksville High great Samantha Gotcher, who won the state individual title in 2012 after finishing runner-up the two previous seasons.

Clarksville High’s Riley Cooper shot an 80-76 – 156 while McKinley Cunningham had an 81-80 – 161.

Bogey free round

Smith shot 1 under 71 in the opening round and was one shot off the lead. When she started play in the final round it was obvious Smith was going to set the tournament pace.

Smith played a bogey free round shooting a 35-33 – 68. She had birdies on holes Nos. 6, 12, 13 and 17.

Cooper proves invaluable

Needing a second golfer to shoot in the 70s, Cooper finished 4-over 76, shooting 1 over 37 on the front and 3-over on the back nine.

Three titles each

Clarksville High and Rossview have dominated girls’ golf over the past six seasons. The Lady Wildcats won consecutive titles in 2011 and ’12. Rossview was state runner-up in 2013 before winning the state title in ’14.

Both programs have won three state titles. The Lady Hawks were state champions in 2003 and 2008.

Combined with the boys’ golf program, Clarksville High has a combined eight state championships and eight individual state titles.

Strong finish from Caudill sisters

Rossview missed qualifying for the state tournament after it lost by a stroke to Clarksville High in the Region 5-AAA Tournament.

The Lady Hawks qualified its top three golfers, with the Caudill sisters finishing in the top ten.

Catherine Caudill finished fifth with a 75-72 – 147 while Caroline Caudill had a ninth-place finish shooting a 74-76 – 150.

If Rossview could’ve counted the Caudill’s scores as a team score, it would have finished state runner-up. The same situation happened last season to the Lady Hawks, who would have finished state runner-up if it could have counted its two individual scores as a team score.

Freshman Sadie Pan had an 85-84 – 169.

Team scores

Clarksville High: Mariah Smith 71-68 – 139, Riley Cooper 80-76 – 156, McKinley Cunningham 81-80 – 161.
